Understanding Fastener Grade Standards: A Complete Guide

Fastener grades define material strength and application suitability. Explore IS, ISO, ASTM and DIN standards for bolts, nuts and screws in industrial use.

Fastener Grades Explained

Industrial fasteners are classified by material grade, which defines their mechanical properties — primarily tensile strength and yield strength. Selecting an incorrect grade is a common engineering error that can lead to joint failure, particularly in structural and high-vibration applications.

ISO Metric Bolt Property Classes

For metric fasteners, the ISO 898 standard defines property classes. The class designation consists of two numbers:

  • 4.6 — Tensile strength 400 MPa, yield ratio 60%. General purpose, low-load applications.
  • 8.8 — Tensile strength 800 MPa. The most commonly used grade for structural applications.
  • 10.9 — Tensile strength 1000 MPa. High-strength applications, automotive and heavy equipment.
  • 12.9 — Tensile strength 1200 MPa. Ultra-high strength, used in aerospace and precision machinery.
"Always specify the full mechanical requirement — grade, material, coating and standard — to ensure correct fastener selection. A 4.6 bolt in a Grade 8.8 application is an accident waiting to happen."

Stainless Steel vs. Carbon Steel

Carbon steel fasteners with zinc or hot-dip galvanized coatings are suitable for most industrial applications. For corrosive environments — coastal locations, chemical plants, food processing — stainless steel (Grade A2-70 or A4-80) is the preferred choice, offering excellent corrosion resistance without the need for coating.

Conclusion

Proper selection, procurement from authorized sources, and disciplined maintenance are the three pillars of reliable industrial component management. Our technical team at Prime Industrial Fasteners is always available to assist with application-specific guidance, product selection, and quality certification requirements.
